Central States SER - Jobs for Progress Inc . has been an effective long-term partner
in workforce and economic development in the Chicago region since 1987. SER , which
means “to be” in Spanish, is an acronym for Service , Employment and Redevelopment .
SER's mission is to promote upward mobility and economic self-sufficiency among low-
income community residents . Central States SER's vision and intent in serving their
community has been to build a globally competitive workforce for employers based on their
needs and to provide high skill/high wage employment opportunities for resident job seekers.
The SER family also includes the SER Business and Technical Institute an accredited
institution that offers high quality education and training to prepare students for a variety of
entry level, computerized office occupations within the business and technical fields. SER
business students gain college credit and SER students are offered life-long job placement
assistance. SER is currently offering programs in Medical Office Assistant and Computer
Operations Specialist.
SER's main facility is in the Humboldt Park area, although clients and students come from
throughout the city of Chicago and the western suburbs. SER will soon have facilities in Little
Village and Back of the Yards. SER's programs extend into the suburbs with satellite locations
in Cicero and Melrose Park . SER also works closely with the communities of Elgin , Aurora ,
and Joliet . SER has special partnerships for services and training with UNO, the Association
House, the Berwyn/Cicero Council on Aging, St. Anthony Hospital , Centro de Salud in Melrose
Park and LULAC of Cicero along with employment relationships with over 50 companies
throughout the Chicago land area.
Trained SER staffers, in cooperation with the Hispanic Outreach Program and the Illinois
Department of Human Services/ORS, are also offering special placement services to people
with disabilities.
SER's Year Round Youth program is designated “YES!”-- Youth Empowered to Succeed . SER
works with young people who have dropped out of school or become disillusioned with the
traditional expectations for their lives. All of the young people who come to SER are in need of
academic enhancement and GED preparation. SER is preparing these young people for
success through a variety of workshops and skills training.
SER focuses on incorporating today's technology into all development initiatives thereby
creating access opportunities for all families. Through the service offered by the many SER
programs, families are able to exit lives of social exclusion and become full participants in
America 's economic mainstream.
